Maculopathy is an eye disorder. Maculopathy along with other retina-related disorders may cause blindness. Elmiron is a drug that has been proved to cause such serious eye problems. People, who suffered maculopathy or other major vision-related problems due to Elmiron intake, are entitled to file an Elmiron lawsuit.

Are You Eligible to File a Lawsuit?

In Elmiron lawsuits, the plaintiffs bring allegations against Janssen Pharmaceuticals for their failure to issue a public warning about the risk to vision from the drug use. According to the recent studies, the interstitial cystitis (IC) drug (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is strongly linked to permanent vision damage and ocular toxicity.

DrsRonald Melles, Robin A. Vora and Amar P. Patelclaimed in their research papers presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2019 that the patients, who had taken Elmiron, developed symptoms of toxicity.

The evidence-backed research, according to the experts, exposes a shocking aspect of Elmiron. Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that has no effective treatment and cure. These patients are put on Elmiron. The medicine was earlier thought to have only a few risks and side effects. Interstitial cystitis patients have been taking this pill year after year.

The drug was launched into the market in the late 1990s and is the only medicine approved to treat pain related to interstitial cystitis. The disease affects millions of people in America each year. Women are more vulnerable to IC than men and many of these patients use the drug longer for their specific vision problem.

Since its coming in the market, hundreds of thousands of patients have already taken the drug and without their being aware of its severe side-effects, have been exposed to the risk of potentially irreversible vision damage.

Maculopathy and Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium

Janssen Pharmaceuticals has recently updated Elmiron’s prescribing information that details the drug’s side effects and warning. However, it offers no information about the potential risks of maculopathy which is kind of disease affecting the macula or other vision-related conditions and changes.

In 2018, researches started to document permanent vision problems strongly linked to long-term use of Elmiron. The backside of the retina is called macula. The retina senses light and immediately sends a signal to brain. The brain processes the signal and enables us to see the image. If retina is damaged, it causes visionary problems. Maculopathy is one of the major causes of blindness.

There are different types of Maculopathy and the one strongly linked to long-time Elmiron use is known as pigmentary maculopathy. The growing and glowing evidences instudies show that this kind of maculopathy is unique to those taking the drug longer.

According to studies, symptoms that have anything to do with Elmiron Use are as follows:

  • Vision dimming
  • Difficulty reading
  • Paracentral scotoma
  • Difficult seeing objects that are close
  • Difficulty adjusting to the dark or dim lighting

If diagnosed in the primary stages, medications may successfully stop its progress. But in advanced stages, the disease may cause permanent loss of vision. Till date, researchers have reported about a patient whose vision damage continued even after the person stopped taking Elmiron.
